ZigZag Hat

I wanted to design something warm, yet not too heavy with this yarn, using an interesting pattern that would be suitable for knitters of all skill levels.

This is a reversible hat that can be worn in two ways – with the insides of the diamonds facing out (wrong side out) like the first picture, or with the diamonds facing in (right side out) like the bottom picture.

There is a lot of stretch to this hat as the ZigZag pattern is ribbed – I have a small head at 55cm/21.5″ and it fits nicely, yet there is so much room in there for a larger head!

The yarn I have used is Erika Knight’s ‘Vintage Wool’. It is an worsted weight yarn made from 100% British Wool, spun in Yorkshire. It works great with this pattern, the wool is super warm but because the hat doesn’t cling too much you don’t over heat.

What I love about this pattern is the flower that appears on the crown of the hat after you have made the decreases.  The ‘petals’ reach right down to the brim, and depending on which way around you wear the hat you can vary how much this stands out, as the inside is inverted.

The pattern is knitted in the round on 5mm needles.
